This novel works language into its most jeweled form, into characters, sisters, that will stay with me for the rest of my life - Safia ElhilloĪ spellbinding tale of three sisters in an explosion of grief and orphaned heartbreak. When We Were Sisters is a stunning accomplishment in form, storytelling, and heart. Fatimah Asghar is an impressive writer precisely because of how she doesn't withhold tenderness, and lets it play and flourish amongst all of the brilliant lyricism, narrative sharpness, and vibrant characters who fill this incredible book - Hanif Abdurraqib When We Were Sisters is a beautiful, richly layered exploration of the generosity that is required to raise oneself, to raise others, to build a world where the people you love can feel safe and whole. There were a couple things I liked, so I'll put a spoiler tag here. The basis of the story is Fallon and her fellow gladiatrices are faced with a threat to their ludus and the freedom they desire. The Sons of Dis thing where they want to sacrifice fighters to their God Eventually something happens to jumpstart the plot of this sequel, but what's behind the plot was one of my least favorite aspects of book one. In fact.as excited as I was to dive back into this world, the excitement slowly dwindled down as I got into the story and began questioning what I loved so much about the first one. I'm beginning to think this should've been left as a standalone because The Defiant didn't do anything for me. Any predictable moments didn't bother me because the story held its own. The concept was fascinating imagining the existence of a training school devoted to making women into gladiatrices. The Valiant was one of my favorite new YA books of 2017. Malorie has already lost so much: her sister, a house full of people who meant everything, and any chance at an ordinary life. Someone very dear to her, someone she believed dead, may be alive. Spineless: The Science of Jellyfish and the Art of Growing a Backbone. Years ago, I left oceanography to raise a family in landlocked Austin, Texas, but jellyfish took me back to the sea. Jellyfish are a muse both angelic and demonic. In the rhythmic movements of their tentacles that carry the threat of a thousand of toxic stings, jellyfish haunt the space between our own heartbeat and mortal danger. Made of roughly 95% water, jellyfish are both virtuosos of disguise, nearly imperceptible against their watery background, and the bearers of a luminescence that revolutionized biotechnology. Jellyfish have been swimming in our oceans for over half a billion years-longer than any other animal. The story of jellyfish is a slippery one.
